Olaf HeineIn May, as previously reported, the band The Script sued James Arthur for copyright infringement, claiming that his breakthrough U.S. single “Say You Won’t Let Go” sounds suspiciously like The Script‘s early hit, “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.” Now, James has hit back at the Irish band in a defiant freestyle rap.

While performing a cover of Jorja Smith‘s song “Blue Lights” for BBC Radio One’s “Live Lounge,” James launched into a rap that seems to be aimed at The Script and the lawsuit.

“Those desperate men call for desperate times/But they will never see a single flippin’ dime of mine,” he raps. “I’m dynamite, every single line I write/Inspired by life/You can get your lawyers to indict me/You rich fellows that jealous, you would spite me?/You should know I never follow The Script/I rip it up and I flip it/I’m from the gutters of Britain.”

“I went from nothing to millions/My fingers up to the system,” he continues, adding, “People keep on telling me I’m meant for the top/All the snakes full of jealousy are praying I’ll flop/You’ll do nothing except kick on a rock/I’ll be so flippin’ high, I’ll be riding with Spock.”

The Script is being represented by the attorney who won the “Blurred Lines”/Marvin Gaye copyright case.  In addition to James, his two co-writers are named in the lawsuit, as are his record and publishing companies. The attorney is asking for a jury trial and an accounting of all the revenue connected to the song, according to Billboard.
