Rumors had been swirling that the notoriously private young couple was no longer together — fueled by the fact that Hailee unfollowed Niall on Instagram and was then spotted with her ex Cameron Smoller in November.
“Hailee and Niall were going strong over the summer but split a few months ago and have been trying to keep it low-key,” a source close to Steinfeld tells E!.
The source adds that Hailee’s “insanely busy” work schedule contributed to the split. She’s currently on a press tour for her upcoming film, Bumblebee.
“They really tried to make it work,” the source says. “It definitely was ‘young love.'”
Neither Niall nor Hailee had ever publicly acknowledged their relationship, but they had been romantically linked since February. The two, of course, have yet to comment on the break-up.
