ABC/Randy HolmesJohn Mayer wanted to hobnob with celebrities at a glamorous Oscars after-party on Sunday night….so he staged his own.

Since John wasn’t sure if he’d actually been invited to Vanity Fair’s swanky bash after the Academy Awards, he held his own version, complete with a Vanity Fair-logo’ed red carpet and celebrity guests, including Halsey, and comedians Dave Chappelle, Jeffrey Ross and Bob Saget

Everyone dressed up as if they were actually attending the event: Halsey wore a glamorous Vivienne Westwood dress, while John wore a fancy black suit.

John documented the whole thing on his Instagram Live show Current Mood and his Instagram stories, including the catering by Shake Shack, and special “Vanity Fair” plates — Vanity Fair being an actual brand name of paper goods.

“I just want to let you know there’s a Vanity Fair red carpet in my house and Halsey is posing on it,” John said on Instagram Stories. “This is the most fun thing I’ve ever done in my entire life.”

In fact, Halsey even performed a version of The Spice Girls‘ “Wannabe” at the event, while John backed her up on acoustic guitar.

He called the entire stunt, “How to be Seen at The @vanityfair Party Without Ever Having to Leave the House and Risking Emotional Vulnerability.

“If you work at the Vanity Fair magazine party, please don’t be mad at me because I really want to go next year,” he said.
