Season 16 of The Voice gets underway tonight on NBC, with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and new coach John Legend.  Kelly is the the first female coach to win more than one season, but says John’s the one who’ll give her the biggest competition when it comes to building her team.

“The sad part is I’d probably pick him over me,” she laughs. “‘Cause he’s just super talented. He’s a very smart dude…musically, he’s got a lot of things to offer. So he is my biggest threat this season, for me specifically.”

Kelly also jokes that Adam is jealous of John because he’s won an Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and Tony.

“Adam always gets defensive, but he ain’t gonna be no EGOT winner, c’mon now!” Kelly teases.

For his part, John’s happy to have a big red chair of his own after appearing on the show as a mentor.

“I always thought it’d be a lot of fun to be a coach on the show, to work with new singers…and just to have fun with my fellow coaches, too,” he says.

“I think [Adam and I] have a lot of similar tastes when it comes to the kinds of singers we’re gonna pick, so I have a feeling we’re gonna butt heads a bit when it comes to that, but that’s O.K,” John adds. “A little friendly competition never hurt anybody.”

One advantage John has over Adam?  In high school, he auditioned for Star Search.

“I won a local Star Search competition that they videotaped and sent to Ed McMahon, and if you won that, you would possibly get an audition for the show.” John recalls. “I never got an audition. So I can really understand what these guys are going through.”
